On May 19, the Union of Greek Communities of Armenia paid tribute to the victims of the Pontic Greek Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex. The Consul of Greece in the Republic of Armenia, Emmanouil Assimakopoulos, and representatives of the Greek community in Armenia participated in the commemoration ceremony.
AGMI Director Edita Gzoyan presented to the guests the temporary exhibition titled “Documenting the Crime: Eyewitness Documenters of the Armenian Genocide”. Particular reference was made to the activities of the Greek church and public-political figure Chrysanthos Philippidis, Metropolitan of Trebizond from 1913 to 1923.
Following the visit, a commemorative event titled “From Survival to Transfer of Memory: The Greek Genocide and the Mission of Generations” was held, during which video messages were shown by Professor Theodosios Kyriakidis of the Pontic Studies Department at Aristotle University, German Armenologist Tessa Hofmann, and Professor Theofanis Malkidis of the International Hellenic University. A report was also delivered by AGMI Senior Researcher Tehmine Martoyan.
The event included an exhibition of works by students from Ararat’s “Ar Studio” and Yerevan’s Armen Tigranyan Music School’s “M Art” painting studio, under the title “The Response of the Past in Children’s Imagination: The Greek Genocide in Children’s Art.”
